Sevilla lifted the UEFA Cup after thrashing Middlesbrough in Eindhoven. Juande Ramos's side went ahead in with a first half header from Luis Fabiano. A late double from Maresca and a fourth from Kanouté meant there was to be no dream finale for the next England coach, Steve McClaren.

Sevilla took the game to Boro right from the off with Alves cracking a shot just wide of Schwarzer's right post in the second minute. Boro responded with Palop having to palm away Rochemback's powerful long free kick.

Luis Fabiano was really in the mood and it was no surprise when the former Porto star opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Alves' chip found his fellow Brazilian and Fabiano's powerful downward header went in off the right hand post leaving Schwarzer rooted to the spot.

Boro added Maccarone to the attack for the second half but Sevilla continued to have more of the play. A Jesús Navas cross was just too high for Kanouté and a delightful Adriano curling shot just cleared upright.

Despite being second best for much of the game, the English side will reflect on a few second half incidents. Viduka must still be wondering how Palop kept out his effort from just six yards with an incredible block after Riggot's header into the big Australian's path. Palop had to tip over a cross-cum-shot from Maccarone. Boro enjoyed their best spell just before Sevilla's late onslaught. Yakubu replaced Queudrue to become the fourth recognised striker in the Boro line up. Hasselbaink set up Viduka who skewered his effort wide. Then the Riversiders in the stadium were screaming for a penalty after Viduka went to ground in an aerial challenge with Javi Navarro.

With Boro pressing forward there was inevitably the danger of a Sevilla counter attack. A Kanouté shot was blocked by Schwarzer who was having a fine game in spite of a fractured cheek bone. But the Australian keeper could do nothing to stop Maresca from crashing home the rebound. The Italian midfielder pounced again to put the result beyond any doubt when he chested down a loose ball and fired in the third from the edge of the area. Kanouté made it four as the Andalusian fiesta got into full swing.
