A good result for Osasuna in their first ever match in the Champions League, a 0-0 draw at Hamburg giving them the edge for the second leg in a fortnight's time. Having already started official matches in their own country, the German side were favourites to win. And they started strongly, Kompany hitting the crossbar in the third minute and Guerrero shooting just wide a few minutes later. But the Spaniards gradually fought their way back, Soldado forcing Kirschstein in to a good save and Cuéllar heading Delporte's free kick past the keeper shortly before the break only for the goal to be disallowed for a dubious offside.

Hamburg started the second half as they had the first, and Ricardo had to be at his best to stop Van der Vaart and Sanogo. Soldado tested Kirschstein again at the other end and Milosevic shot wide with the goal at his mercy, but Ricardo was called upon to save the day again in the final minutes, in particular from a dangerous Van der Vaart free kick. Osasuna came home with the result they wanted though, and club president Patxi Izco has the cheque book ready to strengthen the squad if they do win through to the league stage on the 22nd.
