Valencia top group D with maximum points after beating their most dangerous rival Roma 2-1. Both sides came in to the game having won their first match, and although the first chance fell to the hosts when David Villa fired a shot over the bar, the Italians came close with efforts from Perrotta and Cassetti.

With twelve minutes gone though Valencia went ahead, Villa only half-hitting Vicente's long pass but the ball falling kindly for Angulo to thump a shot into the far corner of the net. A few minutes later though Moretti dragged down Cassetti in the area, and Totti, celebrating his thirtieth birthday, drove the resulting penalty kick past Cañizares.

It took Quique Flores's side less than ten minutes to restore the lead though, Villa picking up a short pass from Moretti and, leaving Chivu sitting on the ground with the faintest of dummies, shooting low inside Doni's near post for his first ever Champions League goal.

The visitors came forward, Pizarro seeing his long shot deflected wide, but Villa was a constant menace and went close a couple of times either side of half time. Roma were lucky to be let off a penalty when the ball struck Ferrari on the arm, and a late shot from Vicente was deflected away for a corner. The Chés had got the win they wanted though, and they are already well on the way to a place in the last sixteen.
