Valencia struggled to take a point off Shakhtar Donetsk, but in the end they picked up the draw they needed on a freezing cold night to secure a berth in the last sixteen.

The Ukrainian side attacked right from the kick off and went ahead in only the second minute when Jadson curled a free kick past Cañizares. Matuzalem hit the post soon afterwards, Lewandowski headed an easy chance wide and Cañizares saved another effort from Aghahowa as the visitors were pushed back in to their own half by "the Miners" (apparently the translation of Shakhtar?).

But with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock Valencia were awarded a free kick outside of the area, and miner's son David Villa stepped up to take it. The Asturian's kick appeared to be going wide, but Morientes stuck out a foot and deflected it past Shust to level the scores.

Before the break though the locals restored the lead with a spectacular shot from outside of the area by Fernandinho which Cañizares got his fingertips to but couldn't stop from entering the net.

The pace dropped off after that though, and midway through the second half Ayala made it all square again with a low header after Morientes headed on Villa's corner. The remaining minutes were physical, with Hubschman breaking Navarro's nose with a flying elbow. But Valencia went home with the result they wanted, and they can now take it easy for the remaining two games.
