Defending champions Barcelona have an uphill battle if they are to stay in the competition after losing 1-2 to Liverpool in the Nou Camp. Frank Rijkaard's side started well, Saviola being flagged offside and Ronaldinho closed down by Finnan before Deco opened the scoring, heading Zambrotta's cross past Reina on the quarter hour mark.

It was the first goal that the English side had let in in three visits to the Nou Camp, and Saviola and Deco both failed to find the target as the hosts pushed for a second in the next few minutes. But after that they ran out of steam, and with two minutes to go to half time Bellamy got on the end of Finnan's long ball to head goalwards. Valdés should have saved easily, but he appeared to slip on the goal-line, and the ball crossed into the net before he pushed it away, Kuyt making sure on the follow up just in case.

Kuyt should have given the visitors the lead early in the second half but he headed over from Gerrard's cross. However midway through the second half Márquez could only head an effort from Kuyt as far as Bellamy, who set up Riise to score. Saviola and Messi both had chances after that, and Deco struck a late free kick against the woodwork. But Barça had lost, and they will have to produce an epic performance in Anfield in two weeks' time if they are to stay in the competition.
