Valencia are through to the last eight of the competition after beating Inter Milan on the away goal rule. Defending a 2-2 draw from the first leg, and having been knocked out of the competition twice by the Italians in recent years, Quique Flores's side opted for a tight defence rather than a more adventurous strategy. As a result they hardly created any problems for Julio César, their only chances a long effort by Angulo which Materazzi got to ahead of Morientes, and a low shot from Baraja shortly before the midfield limped off injured.

Inter too were not allowed many opportunities, although they had a penalty claim turned down when Crespo's shot hit Albiol's arm at point blank range shortly before the break, and Stankovic fired Maicon's cross into the side netting soon after the restart. Moretti headed straight at the visiting keeper when presented with a free header soon afterwards, and Marchena blocked a Materazzi header on the line with Cañizares beaten.

Nerves were frayed in the end though, and as the final whistle went the players were involved in a large brawl which will probably have serious repercussions for the men involved. But Valencia had finally beaten their bête noir, and Spain will have at least one representative in next Friday's draw.
