An excellent result for Valencia in their quarter final first leg, a 1-1 away draw at Chelsea giving the Spaniards a good chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. The opening minutes were for the home side, Shevchenko having a penalty appeal turned down and Kalou firing a shot on the turn against the bar. But David Villa shot wide following a good passing move, and David Silva missed a great opportunity to put Quique Flores's side ahead when he deflected Joaquín's shot straight into the hands of Cech.

The Spanish international made up for his miss a few minutes later though with a spectacular goal, catching the keeper off guard with a shot from wide out on the left wing. But Drogba tested Cañizares before the break, and a few minutes after the restart he levelled the scores after running on to long ball from Ashley Cole to head over the keeper. The locals had a couple of penalty appeals turned down after that, and Shevchenko went close with an overhead kick which Miguel turned over the bar. But Valencia held on, and a score-less draw in Mestalla next Tuesday would be enough to take them through.
