A last minute goal from Chelsea's Essien dumped Spain's last representative out of the Champions League. Valencia had not been knocked out of a European competition by an English club for almost 40 years, and they came in to the return match with the advantage after drawing 1-1 away from home, the away goal meaning that Mourinho's side had to score at least once.

For a few minutes the visitors were on top, Carvalho, Ballack and Shevchenko all having chances. But on the half hour mark Morientes, playing with a heavily strapped shoulder, crashed a warning shot against the upright from outside of the area. And just a couple of minutes later the Spanish international striker got on the end of Joaquín's cross to turn the ball wide of Cech and open the scoring.

Chelsea were still pushing forward, with Lampard and Ballack both shooting wide and Cañizares having to make a first class save from Drogba's header when the striker finally got free of an excellent Ayala shortly before the interval. Just seven minutes after the restart though Drogba got on the end of Essien's cross, and although Ayala and Miguel blocked his shot, the ball fell kindly for Shevchenko to equalise from close range.

Quique Flores decided to try and preserve the result, pulling his men back to defend. Cañizares saved again from Drogba, and then pulled off a magnificent one handed stop from Ballack's header. But with the game seemingly heading for extra time, Essien cut in from the right wing and fired a shot inside Cañizares's near post. There was no time to react, and Chelsea join Manchester United, Liverpool and AC Milan in the semi-finals which this year have a clear English flavour.
