Copa del Rey

Fifth round, second leg

A hat-trick from Saviola in a 3-2 win over Alavés on Tuesday evening was enough to see Barcelona through to the quarter finals. The unsettled striker added two more to the two he scored in the first leg, the first a lucky rebound after Ardouin could only punch out Ronaldinho's free kick, and the second a well guided header from Motta's cross. But Wellington Paulista pulled one back after picking up a return pass from Arthuro to beat Jorquera, and Arthuro levelled the score before the break with a well struck free kick. There were a couple of scares for the local fans early in the second half, in particular Puyol having to clear off the line from Wellington after he rounded Jorquera, and Arthuro heading a corner just wide. However Saviola latched on to Xavi's chipped pass to volley home the winner a few minutes later, and although substitute Ogbeche did hit the post later on, it was already all over. (16.01.07)

Six games on Wednesday, with Sevilla also having some problems before beating second division B side Rayo Vallecano 3-1. Youngster Alfaro put the Andalusians ahead early on, turning in a cross close to goal after Kerzhakov had missed his kick. But Mauri equalised with a low shot soon afterwards, giving them the lead in the tie on the away goals rule, and the forward should have got another when he failed to score with only keeper Cobeño. It was only twenty minutes from the end that half time substitute Kanouté headed in a long cross to restore the advantage, and Alfaro wrapped things up with a third goal after picking up a pass from Kanouté near the end.

The result of the day though was surely Getafe's 2-4 victory at Valencia. David Silva put the home side ahead following a corner, but Nacho equalised with an angled shot past Cañizares three minutes later, and Casquero had a goal disallowed before the break. Nacho then set up Güiza with a clever back heel two minutes after the restart, and Güiza laid on a third goal for Casquero before scoring the fourth himself from David Cortés's lofted pass. The home fans applauded their opponents, who reach the last eight for the first time in their history, but most of the supporters had left the ground when Raúl Albiol headed a late consolation ten minutes from the end.

Only one lower ranked side made it through to the last eight, Valladolid winning 0-1 at Villarreal to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to nineteen games. The only goal of the game came from a Javi Baraja penalty midway through the first half after Arruabarrena fouled Alvaro, increasing the second division team's one goal lead from the first leg. The locals were left with ten men after Cani was shown a second yellow card for protesting after the half time whistle, and although numbers were evened up when Chema was also sent off for a second bookable offence later on, visiting keeper Jacobo kept out efforts from Diego Forlán and his fellow forwards right up to the end.

Osasuna made short shrift of Atlético Madrid, racing into a two goal lead early on and holding on after that for a 2-0 victory. Puñal got both of the goals, the first with a shot from outside of the area after picking up a long throw from Javier Flaño, and the second from the penalty spot after Seitaridis brought down Corrales. The locals could have extended the lead after the restart, but Perea hit the post from a free kick and Agüero had a penalty appeal turned down before the final whistle.

Zaragoza are also through, although it was only thanks to their three goal victory in the first leg after losing 0-1 at home to Málaga. Ristic put the Andalusians ahead on the quarter hour mark, getting ahead of his marker to turn in a cross from Ernesto Gómez. And the second division side could have won by a bigger margin with a bit more luck, especially when Gabi Milito cleared off the line from Ernesto with keeper Miguel beaten. The locals only really tested Goitia once with a Gabi Milito header a couple of minutes from the end.

Deportivo also qualified on the strength of a 1-2 first leg away victory against Mallorca, the two sides drawing 1-1 on the night in the Riazor stadium. Jankovic put the visitors ahead with a spectacular first half strike from 40 metres out, and Diego Tristán put Aouate to the test before being substituted to jeers from his ex fans. But Ballesteros was sent off after giving away a penalty on Riki midway through the second half, Sergio slotting home the resulting spot kick, and Depor didn't give their opponents a chance after that. Real Madrid are out of the cup on the away goals rule after drawing 1-1 in their second leg match with Betis. The goal-less draw from the first leg gave Capello's side the advantage, and when Robinho fired home a deflected shot with only five minutes on the clock they appeared to be on their way to qualifying. But despite putting out a line up full of reserve players, Luis Fernández's side equalised when Dani headed past Diego López from close up after Maldonado headed on Isidoro's cross shortly before half time. Referee Mejuto González ruled out goals by Higuaín and Helguera in the final minutes of each half for offside, and also turned down a penalty appeal by Robinho, and Doblas made important saves from Robinho and Sergio Ramos to see his side through to a quarter final tie with city rivals Sevilla.
