Second division, day 1

Cádiz and Ciudad Murcia share top spot on the opening day after both recorded convincing 3-0 victories. Lucas Lobos scored a hat-trick, including two late penalties, to give Cádiz a win against newly promoted Vecindario, and Ciudad also converted two penalties in beating Poli Ejido. Valladolid are currently third after a 1-3 win at Sporting Gijón earlier in the day, Víctor getting two of the goals for the visitors.

Like Cádiz, Málaga are keen to return to the top flight at the first attempt, and a Pablo Couñago strike got them off to a 0-1 win at Hércules. Albacete also began the new season well with a 2-0 victory over another of the debutants Ponferradina, and Salamanca celebrated their return to the second division with an exciting 3-2 result against Real Murcia, Charcos getting a last minute winner after Antoñito had equalised two minutes earlier.

Not such a good start for Alavés though, Dmitri Piterman's side falling behind in the first minute against Elche before Rubén Navarro made it 1-1. There was a similar scoreline between Castellón and Real Madrid Castilla, under 19 international Mata saving a point for Michel's side, and honours were shared as well in the match between Numancia and Lorca, which ended without goals. Mixed results for the Canary Island sides on the first day of the season. Las Palmas lost 0-1 to Xerez on their return to the second division, the hosts unable to turn around an early Bajic goal despite hitting the woodwork twice. Tenerife won their opening game at Almería by the same score though, a De Palmas own goal four minutes from the end giving them the three points. (26.08.06)
