Second division, day 6

Xerez hold on to top spot despite losing 2-1 at Lorca on Sunday evening. Geijo had given the Andalusians a first half lead, but two from Javi Rodríguez after the restart turned the scoreline around. Only one point separates the top five though after Salamanca beat neighbours Valladolid 2-3 in a thrilling match. Pina got the winner for the visitors after Llorente had equalised twice for Medilibar's team. And another four sides are only two points behind the leading bunch, including Tenerife, who beat last week's second placed team Albacete 1-0 with a late strike from Ayoze.

Ponferradina are level with Tenerife though after a 2-0 win over Poli Ejido, a Rubén Vega penalty and a late goal from Risso giving them the three points. And Ciudad Murcia are also back in the running after a second half strike from Piti gave them a 1-2 win at Elche. Luis García's team drop into the bottom four, as do Hércules, who lost 3-0 against an Almería side for whom Mario Bermejo scored twice late on. Sporting Gijón moved back up into the top half of the table though after a 0-3 win at Castilla earlier in the day. (01.10.06)

A last minute Aranda penalty gave Real Murcia a 1-0 win over Alavés, taking Lucas Alcaraz's side level with leaders Xerez pending their game on Sunday. Málaga are only a point behind them though after coming from a goal down against Las Palmas to win 3-1. Calleja equalised Txiki's early goal before the break, and Salva and Couñago wrapped things up in the last ten minutes. Numancia are fifth after thrashing bottom club Vecindario 1-5, and Castellón move away from the danger zone with a 0-2 victory at Cádiz. (30.09.06)
