Champions League, league stage, day six

Barcelona qualified for the knock out stage of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen, a Ronaldinho free kick and a Gudjohnsen strike within the first twenty minutes taking them through. Valencia were already sure of top spot in their group, and a depleted side lost 1-0 at Roma. The following day Real Madrid drew 2-2 at Dynamo Kiev, Ronaldo scoring twice in the last five minutes to ensure a point. (06.12.06)

Dynamo Kiev 2 - Real Madrid 2

A depleted Real Madrid side drew 2-2 at Dynamo Kiev, Ronaldo scoring twice in the last five minutes to ensure a point and a half share of the €600,000 prize money. All four places had already been decided, Capello's side sure of second spot, with the Ukrainians last after only picking up one draw in their first five group games. But the hosts went two up with less than half an hour on the clock, Shatskikh getting ahead of Mejía to turn in the first and then beating Diego López at the second attempt to score his second of the night. It looked as if Madrid would be going home empty handed before Beckham's corner was headed on for Ronaldo to pull one back. And just two minutes later the striker equalised from the spot after he was pushed over in the penalty area. (06.12.06)

Barcelona 2 - Werder Bremen 0

FC Barcelona qualified for the knock out stage of the competition with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen, a result which takes them above the German side up to second in their group. Ronaldinho gave the Blaugrana the lead in the thirteenth minute, striking a clever free kick low under the defensive wall, and Gudjohnsen got the second just five minutes later after Ronaldinho and Giuly combined to set him up. The Icelandic striker almost made it three before the break, dancing past four of five defenders before shooting against the post, Giuly somehow failing to turn the rebound in to the empty net. But after the restart the visitors started to come back, and Jensen hit the bar with a long shot before the final whistle put the home fans at ease. (05.12.06)

Roma 1 - Valencia 0

Valencia were already sure of top spot in their group before their match at Roma kicked off, and with many of his squad injured, Quique Flores used the occasion to give a run out to some of his lesser used and younger players. The Italians too were missing some of their top names, but they still needed a point to reach the next round, and Panucci headed them in to an early lead after Mexes headed back Taddei's free kick. After that the chances were few and far between, with Joaquín and Tavano putting the best chances over the top. The bad news for the Spaniards though was yet another injury, this time to youth international striker Aarón Ñiguez, who was making his first team debut. (05.12.06)
