Champions League, second round, second leg

The away goal rule decided the fate of all three Spanish sides this week. Valencia were able to consolidate their 2-2 draw at Inter Milan a fortnight ago, a scoreless result in the return leg taking them through. However Barcelona were unable to overturn a 1-2 first leg defeat in the Nou Camp against Liverpool, a late Gudjohnsen strike giving them a 0-1 victory over Liverpool on the night, but not quite enough to save the defending champions from being dumped out of the competition. And the following evening Real Madrid were beaten 2-1 by Bayern Munich, a result which cancelled out the 3-2 scoreline from the first leg. Makaay got the first within ten seconds and Lucio headed a second before Van Nistelrooy's late penalty. (07.03.07)

Bayern Munich 2 - Real Madrid 1

Valencia will be Spain's sole representative in the quarter finals after Real Madrid were knocked out of the competition by Bayern Munich. Capello opted for a defensive line up to try and defend the first leg lead, but his plan only lasted ten seconds before Salihamdzic won the ball off a sleepy Roberto Carlos and crossed in for Makaay to beat Casillas. The Madrid keeper made three vital saves before Raúl hit the outside of the post on the stroke of half time, but Lucio headed home Sagnol's corner midway through the second half, and Van Nistelrooy's penalty seven minutes from the end after Robinho was felled in the area came too late to change the result. Valencia 0 - Inter Milan 0

Valencia are through to the last eight of the competition after beating Inter Milan on the away goal rule. Having been knocked out of the competition twice by the Italians in recent years, Quique Flores's side opted for a tight defence rather than a more adventurous strategy. As a result neither side created too many problems for the keepers, the best chances a Moretti header straight at the visiting keeper, and a header at the other end from Materazzi which Marchena blocked. Nerves were frayed in the end though, and as the final whistle went the players were involved in a large brawl which could have serious repercussions. (06.03.07)

Liverpool 0 - Barcelona 1

Defending champions Barcelona are out of the competition after losing to Liverpool. Needing two goals to have a chance of going through, Rijkaard put out an attacking line up. But his side were over-run in the first half, with Riise and Sissoko hitting the bar and Valdés having to make a couple of important saves. Ronaldinho struck a shot against the post though after the restart, and with fifteen minutes to go substitute Gudjohnsen picked up a pass from Xavi to round Reina score. But after that the visitors hardly troubled the keeper, and Liverpool could have equalised if Valdés had not been on his toes. (06.03.07)
