Spain are European under 17
champions after beating England 1-0 in the final in Belgium. Both sides had
chances before the break, Porritt almost catching out De Egea with a looping
shot and Iago testing Steele at the other end.
But Juan Santiesteban's side
got what was to prove the only goal of the game eight minutes after the
restart, Barcelona's Bojan Krkic driving a low shot back into the net after
Fran Mérdia's effort was blocked. Murphy headed wide and De Egea saved
well from Woods soon afterwards, but Bojan had a goal disallowed and brought
another good save out of Steele in the final minutes.
That was it though, and
Spain had won the trophy for the first time since the category was introduced
in the 2001/2 season (although they did win the under 16 equivalent six times
previously). They will now go on to the under 17 World Cup in August, which
this year takes place in South Korea. |
