Celta had the most difficult draw of the four Spanish sides competing in the UEFA Cup this season, but they are looking good for a place in the next round after a 0-1 win at Standard Liege. The Belgians came out strongly but soon faded, and Baiano went close with a well struck free kick. And with eight minutes to go to the break, Gustavo López picked up a pass from Angel to fire a shot through the legs of a defender and past keeper Renard.

Canobbio came close to scoring a second when the local keeper pulled off a good save from his free kick soon after the restart, but afterwards the home side took control, and Esteban and Tamas managed between them to keep out Sergio Conceiçao. Geraerts headed against the crossbar and Areias missed the target when free on goal, but Celta held on for an important win.
