Celta are second in their group after a 1-0 win over Zico's Fenerbahçe, although they still need to draw in two weeks' time in Palermo if they are to reach the next round. The Galicians had a couple of chances from dead ball kicks early on, Tamas heading over Nené's free kick and Volkan saving comfortably from Canobbio soon afterwards. With ten minutes on the clock though the Turkish side were awarded a penalty when Angel fouled Tuncay, but Esteban guessed correctly and dived to save Alex's spot kick.

Canobbio could have put the hosts ahead soon afterwards with a shot which Volkan turned around the post, but for the rest of the first half the visitors were on top, Tamas clearing off the line from Alex and ex Atlético Madrid striker Kezman forcing a good save out of Esteban.

Volkan made another good save from Baiano after the restart, but Fenerbahçe could have taken the lead when Alex headed against the woodwork, and then Appiah shot against the post. But Baiano just failed to turn in Canobbio's cross, and with twelve minutes to go Canobbio finally broke the ice with a free kick which went past the defensive wall wide of the keeper. It was enough to give Fernando Vázquez's side their first win in this most difficult of groups, but if they don't get a point in Italy in a fortnight's time it will have all been in vain.
