Celta put their crisis behind them, for the time being at least, with a 1-1 draw at Spartak Moscow. It was cold night, and the Galicians were lucky not to go behind when the referee ruled out a Pavlyuchenko strike for a dubious offside eight minutes before the break. And soon afterwards Gustavo López and Canobbio combined to set up make-shift centre forward Antonio Nuñez to beat Khomich and open the scoring.

Five minutes after the restart Canobbio cleared an effort from Kalynychenko off the line, but the Russian midfielder did beat Esteban a few minutes later with a free kick which took a deflection off the defensive wall. Vázquez eventually brought on Baiano, who was nursing a knock, and he could have won it in the final minutes had he been able to beat Khomich when free in front of goal.
