Celta will have an uphill fight to qualify after losing their first leg match 0-1 to Werder Bremen. With one eye on next weekend's relegation battle against Athletic Bilbao, Fernando Vázquez once again put out a weakened side, and they could have gone behind when Hunt hit the post in the first half. Hunt and Klose both had further chances before the break, and Celta's only reply was an effort from makeshift centre forward Antonio Nuñez which Wiese saved on the line.

The introduction of Baiano at the break livened things up, but there was still no way past a well ordered defence. And with five minutes to go substitute Almeida got on the end of Wome's long cross to head the German side into the lead. It could have been worse, Almeida bringing a last gasp save out of Esteban before the final whistle, but right now Celta's priorities lie elsewhere.
