Espanyol were not able to continue their run of seven wins in a row in the competition, but a scoreless draw against Haifa in Tel Aviv set them up well for next week's second leg. Keeper Gorka Iraizoz had to make a couple of saves from Katan and Colautti before the break, although the best chances fell to Valverde's side, Luis García testing Davidovitch with an angled shot and Lacruz lobbing a first time effort just over the bar after the keeper could only punch clear a dangerous cross.

The two defences came out on top after the restart though, Espanyol only going close with a cross from Moha across the face of the goal, and the Israeli side almost scoring near the end when Arbeitman broke free only to shoot weakly at Gorka.
