Espanyol made it through to the last 16 for the first time in nineteen years after a comfortable win over Maccabi Haifa. They left it late though, the first half ending with the same 0-0 scoreline as the first leg, even though De la Peña and Luis García had forced good saves out Davidovitch. But eight minutes in to the second half a partly cleared corner came out to De la Peña, who curled a shot back into the top corner of the net from over 30 yards out.

That broke the ice, and within the next ten minutes they had two more, Tamudo picking up Pandiani's short pass to turn a shot past the keeper, and Luis García getting on the end of a pinpoint pass from De la Peña to score from close range. The tie was over, but there was still time for Pandiani to get on the end of Rufete's cross to score his ninth goal in the competition. Espanyol are now hoping for a revenge meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, who beat them in their only UEFA cup final appearance the last time they got this far.
