A setback for Valencia, who threw away an early lead to end up losing 1-2 to Chelsea. Silva went close for the Spaniards before David Villa latched on to a rebound outside the area and steered a shot wide of Cech. But midway through the first half Drogba and Malouda worked a one two through the defence to set up Joe Cole for the equaliser.

Joaquín tried his luck a couple of times and Villa had a goal disallowed for offside early in the second half. But with twenty minutes to go Drogba ran on to a long ball from Joe Cole to hold off Raúl Albiol and beat Hildebrand. It was a bitter blow for Quique Flores's side, who were hoping for revenge after the English side knocked them out of the competition last season.
