Valencia are out of the Champions League altogether after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Schalke 04. The two defeats against Rosenborg had left them bottom of their table, and only a victory would keep them in the running. But Cañizares had to save from Ernst early on, and with just over half an hour gone they were left with ten men when Albelda was sent off for a hard tackle on Rafinha.

Marchena could have equalised before the break after a free kick fell kindly to him in front of goal, Neue making the save after the refereee waved away appeals for offside. The sending off and an injury to Caneira meant that Koeman had to bring on two substitutes before half time, but the side were unsettled and Cañizares and Marchena between them managed to stop Altintop from putting the German side ahead soon after the restart.

Despite the numerical inferiority Valencia threw everything forward ,and Vicente tested Neuer with a low shot after picking up a pass from Joaquín. But after David Silva fired a shot just wide of the far post in injury time it was all over. Valencia were out of the competition, and they now have to get a draw or a win at Chelsea and hope Schalke lose or draw at home to Rosenborg in their last game to even have a chance of the consolation prize of a place in the UEFA Cup.
