Real Madrid lost their first leg match to Roma, a result which leaves the tie evenly balanced for the return game in a fortnight's time. Raúl put Bernd Schuster's side ahead in the eighth minute after Robben and Guti combined to set him up, his 69th in the competition, a vital away goal for the Spaniards. And they could have gone further ahead in the next ten minutes or so, Van Nistelrooy bundling the ball into the net after Doni spilled Robben's cross only to be ruled offside, and Raúl heading wide from another cross by Robben with the goal at his mercy.

But the Italian side equalised midway through the first half, Gago clearing from Mancini only as far as Pizarro, who drilled in a low shot which deflected off the Argentinian midfielder past Casillas and in off the bar. And early in the second half Mancini ran on to a pass from Totti to round Casillas and score the second for the locals. Schuster threw on Drenthe and Baptista, and Van Nistelrooy fired a shot against the upright from Drenthe's cross. But it was not to be, and Madrid now have to turn things around in the Bernabeu in a fortnight's time.
