Barcelona were left as the only Spanish side in the last eight of the Champions League after Real Madrid lost 1-2 to Roma on Wednesday evening, the fourth year in a row that the Merengues have been knocked out at the last sixteen stage. Bernd Schuster's team were looking to overturn a 2-1 first leg result, but they were held at bay by a well organised defence. Baptista did go close a couple of times early on, but the Italian side could have gone ahead themselves when Aquilani rattled the woodwork and then brought a good save out of Casillas in quick succession from long shots.

With the second half only a few minutes old, Baptista hit the bar with a free kick. Substitute Vucinic hit the bar at the other end though, and with twenty minutes to go Madrid were down to ten men when Pepe was sent off for a second bookable offence. A couple of minutes later Taddei headed the Italian side into the lead from Tonetto's cross but almost immediately Raúl picked up a pass from Robinho to equalise, the referee waving away claims for offside. Schuster threw on Soldado as his side pushed for the goal they needed to take the tie into extra time, but with the game in injury time Vucinic wrapped things up with a second goal for the visitors.
