Atlético Madrid lost their first leg match to Gloria Bistrita, although an away goal scored by Seitaridis early in the second half gave them hope of overturning the result in the Calderón stadium in a week's time. The Romanian side had begun their season before their opponents, and they took the lead in only the sixth minute when Zaharia beat Leo Franco after Tilinca headed on a long clearance. And Tilinca himself took advantage of slack defending to score the second himself shortly before the break.

Up to that point only a couple of headers from Maxi and Antonio López had caused any problems for Albut, but the local keeper could not prevent Seitaridis from pulling one back with a long shot which the keeper helped in off the crossbar in the opening minutes of the second half. After that though Aguirre pulled his side back, happy not to let in more goals and to wait for the second leg, when his players have had more time to get back in their stride. Forlán and Agüero are expected to be recalled from holiday for that match to try and prevent what would not be the first disaster by Atlético at the early stages of a European competition.
