Copa del Rey

Ffith round, second leg

Barcelona are the first club through to the quarter finals after knocking out defending champions Sevilla on the away goal rule. The Andalusians had to score in the Nou Camp after the 1-1 draw in the first leg, and the game got off to a lively start, with Chevantón just failing to turn in an Alves cross and Iniesta going close a couple of times. After that though the pace dropped, with long shots from Henry and Navas either side of half time failing to cause problems for the two keepers. Alves did give the home fans a fright with a long free kick which bounced off the top of the bar, and Navas got the ball in the net only for the strike to be ruled out as Duda was in an offside position. Frank Rijkaard's side were though though, and they will play the winner of the match between Villarreal and Recreativo in the next round. (15.01.07)

Real Madrid are out of the cup after losing 0-1 to Mallorca on Wednesday night. Bernd Schuster's side needed to overturn an adverse result from the first leg, but although they had many chances they were unable to beat an inspired Moyà. The young keeper stopped at least three shots from Saviola and two from Higuaín before the break, and when he was beaten Borja Valero was there to block another effort from Higuaín on the line. Saviola limped off to be replaced by Van Nistelrooy at the break, but he too came up against Moyà. Baptista and Guti also missed chances as Madrid's desperation increased, and with everybody forward their were caught by the sucker punch, Ibagaza's first touch from a long pass taking him past Cannavaro, and his second touch seeing the ball float over the head of an advancing Dudek and in to the net. It was all over, and Madrid (who have not won the cup since 1993) will have to wait another year.

Atlético Madrid are in to the last eight on the away goal rule after drawing 1-1 at Valladolid. Javier Aguirre put out a strong side with Agüero and Forlán up front, and with Mendilibar reserving his best players for the league the visitors seemed to have the advantage. Alberto was on top form though in the first half, keeping out a deflected shot from Raúl García and a couple of efforts from Agüero, and Ogbeche almost caught out Falcón at the other end. Three minutes after the restart Agüero latched on to a back-heel pass from Luis García to open the scoring, but Llorente followed up his weekend hat-trick by equalising with a shot on the turn twenty minutes later. And the game ended in controversy after referee Iturralde González turned down two late penalty appeals by Baraja and Llorente, the decisions upsetting Mendilibar so much that he was sent off for his protests.

The tie between Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao went to penalties after a 1-1 draw between the two sides, the same result as the first leg. Luis García scored for the Catalans as early as the tenth minute, turning Jonathan Soriano's cross in from close up after Aranzubia could only beat out a fierce shot from Moisés Hurtado. Del Horno went close three times at the other end, and with just over half an hour gone the locals were left with ten men when Luis García was sent off for pushing Tiko in the face. Valdo and Riera went close either side of half time, but Lafuente had to push an Amorebieta header against the post after the restart. And with seven minutes to go to the break Iraola equalised after the keeper could only push out Susaeta's header. Numbers were evened up when Luis Prieto picked up a second booking in extra time, and Moisés headed against the bar before the game went to penalties. David López missed the first spot kick for the Basque side, but Lola fired his penalty over the top and Torrejón (who also missed the last penalty in last summer's UEFA Cup final against Sevilla) hit the post, taking the visitors through 3-4.

Extra time was needed as well at the Madrigal stadium, where Villarreal went through in the end after a 2-0 win over a Recreativo side which contained several ex Villarreal players. Marcos Senna soon cancelled out Recre's one goal lead from the first leg with a diving header from Nihat's cross, and on-loan keeper Barbosa saved a couple of times from Nihat before the interval. Diego López did well to tip over a header from Camuñas before the half time whistle, and Cáceres headed just wide before the end of the ninety minutes, and Quique Alvarez headed an effort from Rossi away from goal with the keeper beaten. Ten minutes in to extra time though Rossi picked up Godin's pass on a quick breakaway to fire a shot in off the post, and the ex Manchester United striker should have scored again when Barbosa saved his penalty kick after Cáceres brought down Pires in the area. A goal however for the visitors would have taken them through, and Cáceres came within a whisker of getting it when his acrobatic kick came back off the bar late on.

Racing Santander's good form continues, and they reached the last eight after beating Zaragoza 4-2. Oliveira gave new coach Ander Garitano hope of a good start with an early goal, following up after Coltorti could only push out a shot from Diego Milito. But Tchité equalised with a looping header from Colsa's cross midway through the second half, and soon afterwards Oriol headed a second goal from Jorge López's long free kick. Garay tested César a couple of times after that, and Oscar Serrano made it three with just over an hour gone following Jorge López's corner. Milito got another one back with a bouncing shot past the keeper after Oliveira headed the ball on, but an injury time Garay penalty after Zapater fouled Pablo Alvarez wrapped things up.

Valencia are in to the next round after a comfortable 2-1 win over Betis, a result which takes some pressure off coach Ronald Koeman. Zigic added to his side's first leg lead when he got on the end of Moretti's headed pass to head past Castro in the eighth minute, and Joaquín and Vicente went close later in the first half. Caffa lobbed a shot against the post, but Baraja and Vicente shot wide either side of half time, and Silva sent Vicente away for him to score his side's second midway through the second half. Juanito headed one back from Xisco's cross with a quarter of an hour to go, but it was too little too late.

Getafe make up the quarter final draw after they cruised through 4-0 on aggregate against Levante. Three from the first leg virtually sealed the tie, and there was little interest from either side before the break, with Ustari saving comfortably from Pepe Pla and Pedro León, and Kepa wasting a couple of chances in the opposite goal. Ustari saved from Descarga and Miguel Angel headed against the bar after the restart, but Gavilán connected with a cross from Nacho to make it 0-1 on the night. There was still time for Riga to miss and for Iborra to hit the bar again, but the tie was already over and Michael Laudrup's side go through to play Mallorca, with the first leg in Madrid next week.
