Second division - day 1

Sporting Gijón top the second division table at the end of the first weekend after a 4-0 win over Poli Ejido. Barral got two for the Asturians, including a first half penalty after Usero was sent off for handling in the area, and Kike Mateo and Luis Morán wrapped things up late on. Málaga join Numancia in second spot though after beating Salamanca 3-0, unsettled striker Salva getting two of the goals for the South coast side, with Hidalgo getting one in between. And Gimnastic are just outside of the top three after a 2-0 victory over Alavés, new signings Abraham and Maldonado getting a goal in each half for the Catalans.

Nàstic were the only one of the relegated sides to win though, the big surprise being Real Sociedad's 0-2 defeat at the hands of Castellón. Arana and Tabares got the goals, and the home fans booed their players off at the end. Earlier in the day Celta were held to a 1-1 draw by Córdoba, a side who were two divisions below them last season. Canobbio thought he had got the winner for the Galicians until Arthuro's late strike. Elsewhere David Vidal's Elche notched up their first three points of the season with a 0-1 victory at Albacete, and Sevilla Atlético and Tenerife shared the points in a 1-1 draw. (26.08.07)

Numancia and Cádiz are the early leaders in the second division after both won their opening games. Numancia beat Las Palmas 3-0, helped by the sending off of Cobos after he gave away a penalty at the start of the second half. And Cádiz won 2-0 against league newcomers Granada 74, who were only given the green light to play in the second division a couple of days ago after their take over of Ciudad Murcia in the summer. Draws in the other two matches played on Saturday, transfer listed Yordi scoring twice for Xerez as they held Hércules 2-2, and newly promoted sides Racing Ferrol and Eibar got their first points on the board after their game finished 1-1.
