Copa del Rey, second round

The second round of the Spanish Cup takes place this week, with second and third division sides involved in ties which are played over one leg. One match was brought forward to Tuesday, UD Las Palmas beating Chris Coleman's Real Sociedad 1-0 despite playing for almost 90 minutes with ten men. Juanma headed the only goal from a corner midway through the first half. (04.09.07)

The remaining 21 ties took place on Wednesday, with the exception of the game between Real Unión and Vecindario, which was postponed after the Canary Islanders claimed they could not find plane tickets to travel to Irún. As in previous years the draw was divided into two halves, with second division A sides playing each other and the lower division teams paired up separately.

Only Elche and Cádiz managed to win away from home of the 2A sides, respectively at Salamanca and Córdoba, and Málaga continued their good form in the league with a 2-1 win over Celta. The 12 sides who won through from the regional divisions all play in the second division B, including such illustrious names as Rayo Vallecano, Ponferradina, Pontevedra and Burgos. The third round keeps the same format, with first division sides entering in round four. (05.09.07)
