Champions League, day 5

Barcelona and Sevilla are both through to the knock out stage after the opening day of round five. Barcelona drew 2-2 at Olympique Lyon to ensure top spot in group E, and Sevilla also head up group H after beating Arsenal 3-1. Disappointment for Spanish sides on the following day though, with Real Madrid still needing a point in their last game to qualify after losing 3-2 at Werder Bremen, and Valencia out of the competition after drawing 0-0 with Schalke 04. Werder Bremen 3 - Real Madrid 2

Real Madrid still need a point in their last game after losing 3-2 at Werder Bremen on day five. Within four minutes they were behind when Rosenberg bounced a shot past Casillas, and although Robinho picked up a pass from Marcelo to equalise ten minutes later, Sanogo got on the end of Rosenberg's cross to volley past the keeper and restore the lead before the break. Van Nistelrooy missed an easy chance to level the scores again after the restart, and a few minutes later Hunt ran on to a long ball from midfield to put the German side further ahead. Van Nistelrooy did beat Vander later on, but it came too late to change the result. (28.11.07)

Valencia 0 - Schalke '04 0

Valencia are out of the Champions League altogether though after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Schalke 04. The two defeats against Rosenborg had left them bottom of their table, and only a victory would keep them in the running. But Cañizares had to save from Ernst early on, and with just over half an hour gone they were left with ten men when Albelda was sent off for a hard tackle on Rafinha. Vicente tested Neuer after the restart, but after David Silva fired a late chance wide it was all over. (28.11.07)

Olympique Lyon 2 - Barcelona 2

Barcelona ensured top spot in their group after drawing 2-2 at Olympique Lyon. Messi and Bojan combined to set up Iniesta for the opening goal with only three minutes on the clock, but four minutes later a long free kick from Juninho bounced past Valdés, the first goal he had let in this season in the Champions League. Messi restored the lead from the penalty spot early in the second half after he was fouled by Squillaci, and Gudjohnsen missed a couple of chances to put the Catalans further ahead. But Abidal gave away a second penalty on Keita later on which Juninho converted to keep the French side in with a chance of qualifying. (27.11.07)

Sevilla 3 - Arsenal 1

Sevilla are also sure of a place in the last sixteen after beating Arsenal 3-1, the first defeat for the Gunners since last April. Eduardo picked up a cross from Bendtner to hold off Alves and put his side in front with just over ten minutes gone. But Keita drilled home the equaliser after Gilberto could only clear a Navas cross into his path soon afterwards, and Luis Fabiano headed an Alves free kick wide of Almunia to give the Spaniards the lead before the break. Kanouté rounded things off from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Touré with just a couple of minutes to go, taking his side above their opponents in the group table. (27.11.07)
