Copa del Rey, fifth round, first leg

Disappointing results for both Madrid sides on Thursday. Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Mallorca, a first defeat for Bernd Schuster's side in over six weeks. Trejo's opening goal following a corner midway through the first half was cancelled out a minute later by a spectacular strike from Higuaín. But Arango drove the winner past Dudek early in the second half to give the islanders the edge for the second leg. And Atlético Madrid could only draw 0-0 at home to Valladolid, the only point in their favour a clean sheet by Falcón to take into next week's tie. Forlán did hit the post as the locals dominated the first half, but the local keeper was kept busy as the visitors came back after the break. (10.01.08)

The fifth round kicked off on Wednesday with six ties, the pick of the bunch being the fixture between Sevilla and Barcelona, which ended 1-1.Henry opened the scoring for Frank Rijkaard's side after controlling a long ball from Márquez midway through the first half, but Diego Capel drove home a Chevantón corner to equalise shortly before half time. Barça's neighbours Espanyol also drew 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao, extending their unbeaten run to a record 17 games. Jonathan Soriano took advantage of a long pass from Luis García to beat Aranzubia with twenty minutes to go, but Susaeta equalised ten minutes later.

Two goals from Joaquín were enough to give Valencia a 1-2 win at Betis. The ex Betis winger headed past Castro twice early on, the first from Silva's cross and the second from Mata's, with Pavone getting one back following a corner in the second half. Arizmendi and Somoza were sent off later on. Valencia's city rivals Levante are virtually out though after losing 3-0 at Getafe. Albín got the first before half time with a free kick which bounced past everybody, and Casquero and Pablo Hernández fired in two more in a five minute period later in the second half.

Recreativo have had some good cup runs in previous years, and they are on track for a place in the last eight after a 1-0 win over Villarreal. On loan Martín Cáceres headed the only goal against his employers from a second minute corner, and although Cani hit the post later in the first half the Andalusians held on for the victory. Elsewhere Zaragoza and Racing Santander left everything to next week's second leg after drawing 1-1. Oliveira opened the scoring with a free kick midway through the first half, but Garay equalised a quarter of an hour from the penalty spot. (09.01.07)
