Second division - day 24

Numancia are back on top after a 0-3 win at Xerez on Sunday evening. Jordà headed them into the lead shortly before the break, and Del Pino and Carmelo added two more later on after their opponents had had two men sent off. Earlier in the day Elche moved up into third spot after beating last weekend's incumbents Sporting Gijón 3-1. Cobo's early penalty was cancelled out by a strike from Barral soon afterwards, but Raúl Martín restored the lead midway through the first half and José Vega wrapped things up with a second penalty near the end.

Real Sociedad are just a point outside of the top three after a 0-1 victory at Poli Ejido. The Basque side dominated the first half, but couldn't beat Alvaro Iglesias until the hour mark, when Díaz de Cerio scored after new signing Víctor set him up. Celta lost ground on the leading group though after losing 2-1 at Eibar. Diego Costa gave the Galicians an early lead, but goals in the second half from Goiria and Altuna turned the scoreline around.

Elsewhere Tenerife moved up to ninth after a 2-0 victory over Granada 74. Oscar Pérez and Nino got the goals at the end of the first and second halves. Salamanca and Cádiz remain in mid-table after drawing 1-1, A first goal by Bangoura for the Andalusians was cancelled out by a last minute header from David Rodríguez. And Albacete and Hércules also drew 1-1, a result which takes the Manchegans out of the bottom four to the detriment of Nàstic. Both goals came from the penalty spot in the first half, Farinós putting the locals ahead and Barkero equalising for the visitors. (10.02.08)

Leaders Málaga lost 2-1 to Córdoba on Saturday evening, their first defeat in ten games. Cheli put them ahead on the stroke of half time, and although Arthuro equalised three minutes in to the second half, Pablo Ruíz headed the winner later on. Castellón moved up to third pending Sunday's games after beating Gimnàstic 3-1, their fifth win in a row under new coach Pepe Murcia. López Garay headed them into an early lead and Tabares got two more after the restart, with Calle getting one back in between.

Down at the bottom, Las Palmas stayed clear of the relegation spots after a 2-2 draw with Racing Ferrol. Marcos Márquez opened the scoring in the first minute, but Pereira and Medina put the Galicians ahead less than ten minutes later. Cristian equalised for the Canary Islanders late on. Alavés also moved away from the danger zone with a late 1-0 win over Sevilla Atlético. Toni Moral beat Javi Varas with an injury time free kick to take the three points. (09.02.08)
