UEFA Cup, third round, first leg
Not the best of weeks for
Spanish sides as the UEFA cup resumed after the winter break, with two defeats
and a draw, and only one goal between the three teams. Getafe were the
only team to get anything out of the first leg, a 1-1 draw at AEK Athens
setting them up for next week's return game. It could have been better though
after De la Red gave them the lead with four minutes to go, but Blanco
equalised for the Greek side in injury time.
Villarreal lost 1-0
to Zenit in a frozen Saint Petersburg, Pogrebynak scoring the only goal
for the Russians in the second half after a mix up between Diego López
and his defence let him through.
And the following day
Atlético Madrid were beaten 1-0 by Bolton, the turning
point coming after the break when Agüero was controversially sent off
after spitting at the ground, the referee considering that it was aimed at a
local player. With the team still in disarray, Diouf took advantage to score a
minute later. (14.02.08) |
