Second division - day 27

A surprise on Sunday evening, where second placed Málaga were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom club Poli Ejido. Juli actually put the visitors ahead before Baha equalised in the second half. Real Sociedad stayed level with Sporting Gijón after a 4-2 win over struggling Xerez, although they are still behind the Asturians on goal difference. Penalties from Xabi Prieto and Víctor put the Basques two up at the interval, but goals from Yordi and Carlos Calvo levelled the scores before Díaz de Cerio and Garitano won it late on. Just below them in the table, Celta and Elche cancelled each other out in a 2-2 draw. Jesús Perera scored twice for the Galicians either side of half time, but two in a minute from Noel-Williams and Raúl Martín saved a point for the visitors.

It was a day for draws though, with the match between Hércules and Salamanca also ending 2-2. Quique Martín and Català put the visitors two up, but a Farinós penalty and a late strike from Sendoa took some pressure off beleaguered coach Andoni Goikoetxea. Cádiz and Castellón drew 1-1, leaving both safely esconced in mid-table. Gustavo López scored for the Andalusians on the quarter hour mark, but Oberman equalised soon after the restart. Elsewhere Gimnàstic climb out of the relegation spots to the detriment of Alavés after a 2-0 victory over Las Palmas. Jandro got the first from the penalty spot and Moisés wrapped things up in injury time. (02.03.08)

Sporting Gijón beat leaders Numancia 1-0 on Sunday lunchtime to consolidate third spot in the table. Kike Mateo got the only goal midway through the first half to hand the Soria based side their first away defeat of the season. Sevilla Atlético moved up to fourth pending the evening matches after a 2-1 win over Eibar. Alfaro and Salva Sevilla got the goals in the last ten minutes, and Javi Varas saved a late penalty. Only three games in the second division on Saturday, none involving the top ranked teams. Tenerife moved to within four points of the promotion spots after a 1-0 win over Alavés, with Marc Bertrán getting the only goal in the first half. And Córdoba are up to mid-table after a 0-2 win at neighbours Granada 74, Juanlu and Cristian Alvarez scoring for the Andalusians. Further down the table Racing Ferrol and Albacete drew 1-1, Pereira scoring for the Galicians late on to keep them five points ahead of their opponents. (01.03.08)
