Champions League, first knock out stage, second leg

Real Madrid 1 - Roma 2

Barcelona are the only Spanish side in the last eight of the competition after Real Madrid lost 1-2 to Roma on Wednesday evening. Bernd Schuster's team were looking to overturn a 2-1 first leg result, but they were held at bay by a well organised defence. With twenty minutes to go Pepe was sent off for a second bookable offence, and a couple of minutes later Taddei headed the Italian side into the lead. Raúl picked up a pass from Robinho to equalise almost immediately, but with the game in injury time Vucinic wrapped things up with a second goal for the visitors. (05.03.08)

Barcelona 1 - Celtic 0

Barcelona cruised through to the quarter finals of the competition with a 1-0 win over Celtic. Xavi got the only goal of the game within the first three minutes, flicking the ball over the head of Boruc from Sylvinho's cross. And with their opponents then needing three to turn things around, Frank Rijkaard's side controlled the game from then on and didn't take any risks. The bad news though for the local coach was an injury to Messi in the first half, the Argentinian forward limping off in tears before the break. (04.03.08)

Sevilla 3 - Fenerbahçe 2 (2-3 pso)

Sevilla are out of the competition after losing to Fenerbahçe in a penalty shoot out. The Andalusians appeared to be on their way to victory when two mistakes by keeper Volkan Demirel allowed an Alves free kick and a long shot from Keita into the net in the first ten minutes. But Deivid got one back, and although Kanouté restored the two goal cushion before the break, a second goal from Deivid took the game into extra time and then penalties. And Volkan changed from villain to hero with three penalty saves to take the Turkish side through. (04.03.08)
