Spain qualified for the
Elite round of the 2007/8 European Championships after victories over San
Marino and Andorra, and a draw with Wales. (06.10.07)

Spain started the qualifying
tournament hitting minnows San Marino for six, including a hat-trick from
Liverpool striker Dani Pacheco, who also missed a second half penalty.
Barcelona's Thiago got a goal either side of half time, and Atlético's
Edu Valle came on to score as well.

Spain beat hosts Andorra in
the second match to ensure one of the two places in the Elite round together
with Wales, who also won their first wo games. Atlético's Vidal and Keko
Gontán both scored for Juan Santiesteban's side, with Thiago getting one
in between after Pacheco set him up. Andorra fought well though, despite having
Gilbert Sánchez sent off in the second half,

Spain and Wales came in to
the final game with qualification for the Elite stage in the bag, and the only
thing at stake was who would finish top of the group. Keko Gontán gave
Juan Santiestban's side a first half lead, and Pacheco and Thiago both missed
chances before the break. Wales needed to win though, and they turned the
scoreline around with strikes from Howard and Preen. But in the end
Gontán got his second of the game with a shot from outside of the area
to ensure his side took first place on goal average.
