A spectacular start for Getafe in their first game of the league stage, a 1-2 victory at Tottenham putting them already on their way to a place in the next round. With the team struggling in the league, Michael Laudrup put out a much changed line up. The Spaniards had the better of the opening minutes, but with twenty minutes on the clock Berbatov headed back Chimbonda's long cross allowing Defoe to nip in ahead of Ustari and score.

Just two minutes later though Getafe were level, Granero's wide free kick bouncing through the defence, allowing De la Red to get the slightest of touches with his hell past Cerny. The English side reacted quickly, Berbatov unlucky to have a strike ruled out minutes later for the positional offside of Defoe, and Defoe fired a shot over the top before the interval.

Laudrup had to bring on Pato Abbondanzieri for the injured Ustari at the break, and the new keeper was in action early on to save from Huddlestone. Berbatov and Defore both went close, but with twenty minutes to go the visitors took the lead with a brilliantly taken goal, Braulio getting on the end of a Cortés cross to drag the ball past Cerny with his heel.

There were some nervous moments after that, Berbatov heading against the bar and Pato uncharacteristically allowing a ball through which Cata Díaz had to clear. But they held on for an epic victory which signalled the end for Spurs coach Martin Jol, who was fired shortly after the game ended.
