Villarreal will have their work cut out in a fortnight's time to reach the quarter finals after drawing 1-1 at home to Panathinaikos. Pellegrini's side dominated the first half, Eguren heading an early free kick wide, Rossi bringing a good save out of Galinovic and Ibagaza shooting inches wide of the post.

But with just under an hour on the clock Karagounis picked up a ball outside of the area and fired in an unstoppable shot which Diego López couldn't prevent from entering the top corner of the net.

The local keeper had to be at his best to save from Mantzios a few minutes later, but midway through the second half the referee awarded a hotly disputed penalty after Pires was tripped in the area, and Rossi stepped up to make it all square.

The US / Italian striker almost won it when he curled a shot just wide of the post late on, but it was not to be and they now have to go to Greece in a fortnight's time needing a win or a high scoring draw.
