Second division - day 9

Salamanca stay three points clear at the top of the table after a 2-0 victory over Huesca on Sunday evening. Cohen and Quique Martín got the goals either side of half time. Hércules are back to second after beating Alavés 3-0, Dani Carril opening the scoring on the stroke of half time and Farinós and Rubén Navarro adding two more to keep up their side's unbeaten record. And Castellón are in fifth spot, two points off the top three, Arana scoring twice in a 2-3 victory at Real Sociedad.

Down at the bottom, Murcia are on the verge of escaping the drop zone after a 1-0 win over a Sevilla Atlético side who are now in second last spot. Despotovic got the goal to take Javier Clemente's side level with Celta, who drew 1-1 at Albacete earlier in the day. Elsewhere Levante and Gimnàstic stay in mid-table after they drew 2-2, the Catalans recovering from two down thanks to goals from Campano and N'Gal in the last ten minutes. (26.10.08)

A last minute goal from Ewerthon gave Zaragoza a 2-1 victory over Xerez, taking them above leaders Salamanca pending their game on Sunday. Oliveira had put Marcelino's side ahead early in the second half, but Antoñito equalised for the visitors a few minutes later. Rayo Vallecano are up to third though, just a point behind the top two, after a convincing 4-1 win over Eibar. Enguix opened the scoring in the first half, and Aganzo, Pachón and Collantes added three more before Toquero's last minute consolation for the Basque team.

Tenerife started the weekend with a chance of making the promotion spots as well, but in the end they were defeated 2-0 by Córdoba. Pablo Ruíz and Yordi got the goals in a three minute period midway through the second half to take the Andalusians clear of the danger zone. Las Palmas and Girona also inched away from the lower positions after drawing 2-2, although the Canary Islanders will be upset that they threw away a two goal lead. Bottom club Elche and fellow strugglers Alicante did themselves no favours though, a 0-0 draw leaving both still in the relegation spots. (25.10.08)
