Copa del Rey, quarter final, first leg

Mallorca got the edge over Betis in their first leg tie, Keita getting the only goal midway through the second half. Earlier in the evening Athletic Bilbao and Sporting Gijón drew 0-0, the visitors having the majority of chances but Llorente missing a first half penalty. (22.01.09)

A thrilling match between the last two cup winners, Valencia and Sevilla, with the defending champions running out 3-2 victors. David Villa put the Ches ahead early on, but Luis Fabiano headed in Diego Capel's cross seven minutes after the restart, and Adriano gave the Andalusians the lead soon afterwards. However strikes from Baraja and Mata in the last few minutes turned the scoreline around once again.

Later in the evening city rivals Espanyol and Barcelona drew 0-0 in their first leg tie. Pochettino was in charge of the locals after Mané was fired midweek, and his team held their own against a side missing most of their key players. (21.01.09)
