Match round-up - Second Division A Day 26

Tenerife consolidated second spot with a 3-0 victory over Celta on Sunday evening. Alfaro and Luna put the Canary Islanders two up within the first ten minutes, and Nino added a third later on to take his side to within three points of Xerez. Castellón are still in the running though after they beat fellow promotion candidates Salamanca 2-0, Ulloa and Mario Rosas getting the goals in the second half to keep them within two points of the top three.

Levante moved up to eighth spot after beating bottom club Sevilla Atlético 1-2, Xisco Nadal and Rubén scoring the goals in the first half. And Gimnàstic are just two places behind them in the table, José Mari getting the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Albacete. Eibar stay down in the relegation spots however after a 1-2 defeat at the hands of struggling Alicante, who came from one down to win with late strikes by Pedro and Borja. (01.03.09)

Leaders Xerez were held to a 1-1 draw by third placed Rayo Vallecano on Saturday evening. Both teams had won their last five matches, but they had to share the points after Calle cancelled out an earlier goal from Collantes before the break. Hércules moved up to second pending Sunday's games after a 4-2 win over Las Palmas. Saúl gave the Canary Islanders an early lead, but the Alicante based side turned it round in the second half. And Zaragoza move back up to within a point of the top three after beating Murcia 1-4, thanks to goals from Ayala, Zapater and Arizmendi after the restart.

Real Sociedad's hopes of going up seem to have disappeared though after a 2-1 defeat at neighbours Alavés left them eight points behind the promotion spots. Abreu put the visitors ahead before the break, but second half strikes from Javi Guerra and Almirón gave the home side a much needed win. Alavés climb out of the relegation zone ahead of Córdoba, who were leading at Girona right up until the fourth minutes of injury time, when Chuchu made it 1-1 in the end. Elsewhere Huesca beat Elche 3-2, two late penalties from David Fuster not enough to save a point for the visitors. (28.02.09)
