Match round-up - Second Division A Day 34

Xerez kept up their push for promotion with a 2-0 victory over bottom club Sevilla Atlético. Goals from Mario Bermejo and Carlos Calvo either side of half time were enough to take the Andalusians back above Tenerife. Rayo Vallecano drop out of the top three though after a surprise 2-0 defeat to Alicante. The locals had not won at home in almost seven months and Rayo had gone sixteen games without defeat, but a goal in each half from Azkoitia were enough to give the East coast side the win.

Real Sociedad kept their slim hopes of promotion alive after a 1-2 win at Huesca. The Basque side went two up before the break with strikes from Abreu and Aranburu, but Camacho got one back two minutes after the restart. Real moved up level with Salamanca, who could only draw 1-1 against Elche. David Fuster put the visitors ahead before the break, but Quique Martñin saved a point in the last minute. Levante are now three points behind both of them after they drew 2-2 at Celta, although they will be grateful for a point after coming from two goals down to level the scores. (26.04.09)

Tenerife moved back to the top of the second division pending Sunday's games after a 2-0 win over neighbours Las Palmas. A sell-out crowd saw Richi and Nino get the goals after the restart. Zaragoza moved up to third after beating Eibar 2-3, Arizmendi getting the winner after the locals had fought back from two down to equalise. Hércules stay in fourth spot though after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Castellón.

Alavés kept their hopes of survival alive after a 0-1 victory at Girona, Cuevas scoring the only goal to take his side within four points of safety. Murcia are now only two places above the relegation spots after a 3-0 defeat at Gimnàstic, Jordi Alba, Víctor and Moisés getting the goals for the Catalans. And Córdoba are level on points with Murcia after a 1-1 draw at Albacete, Pierini cancelling out an earlier strike from Begoña. (25.04.09)
