Match round-up - Second Division A Day 35

Xerez moved a step closer to a place in the first division for the first time in their history after a 0-1 victory over Elche on Sunday evening. Mario Bermejo scored the only goal with twenty minutes to go to make it five victories in a row. The Andalusians are now three points clear of Tenerife and eight above fourth placed Hércules, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Nàstic earlier in the day. The visitors twice took the lead through Víctor and Bauzà either side of half time, but goals from Morán and Tote soon afterwards squared it both times.

Bottom club Sevilla Atlético are already relegated, but they finally managed to win their second game of the season after beating Girona 2-1 on Sunday lunchtime. José Carlos and Armenteros got the goals, with Chechu replying in between. Alavés are closer to the drop after a late 0-1 defeat to Castellón, Emilio Nsue getting the only goal ten minutes from the end to give the visitors their first win in nine games. And Córdoba stay five points above Alavés after losing 0-2 to Salamanca, strikes from Cohen and Miku taking the visitors up to sixth in the table. (03.05.09)

Second placed Tenerife stay four points clear of their nearest rivals Zaragoza after drawing 1-1 in the Romareda stadium on Saturday evening. Youngster Ander Herrera gave the home side the lead in only the second minute, but top scorer Nino equalised shortly before the break. Zaragoza stay in the top three though after fifth placed Rayo Vallecano were surprisingly beaten 0-3 by Albacete. Goals by Jaime, Javi Jiménez and Tarantino got caretaker coach Maximo Hernández off to a best possible start.

Real Sociedad's slim hopes of promotion took another blow after they could only draw 2-2 with Celta. Only five seasons ago the two teams were playing in the Champions League, but their fortunes have gone downhill since then, and both look like staying at this level for another season at least. Dinei and Ghilas put the visitors two up at the break, but an Abreu penalty and a strike from Necati levelled the scores. Levante are now only a point behind the Basque side after beating struggling Alicante, with Pedro Vega and Samuel getting the goals in the last half hour.

Eibar look like they are heading for relegation after a 2-0 defeat at Murcia. The locals themselves started the day just one place above the drop zone, but goals early on from Ochoa and Despotovic took them eight points clear of the bottom four. Elsewhere Las Palmas and Huesca inched closer to safety after a 1-1 draw. Roberto gave the visitors the lead soon after the restart, but Pablo Sánchez saved a point for the Canary Islanders later on.
