Match round-up - Second Division A Day 36

Xerez's success story continues, and they are now even closer to a place in the first division after a 0-2 victory at Girona. Momo headed the Andalusians in to the lead in the second minute, and then added a penalty to leave the Catalans within six points of the drop zone. Xerez stay three points ahead of Tenerife, who beat Murcia 3-1 earlier in the day. Alfaro scored twice for the Canary Islanders and Juanlu added another before Dani Aquino got one back for the visitors.

Real Sociedad have probably left it too late to go up, and with the top three winning they stay eleven points adrift of the promotion spots despite a 1-2 victory at Alicante. Second half goals from Abreu and Xabi Prieto put them two up before a late consolation from Azkoitia. Castellón are still a point behind Real after a 3-0 win over bottom club Sevilla Atlético, with Arana, Nsue and Ulloa on the scoresheet. The youngsters are already mathematically down, and Alavés are five points away from safety after a 1-1 draw at Gimnàstic, Albácar's penalty for the visitors cancelled out by a strike from Moisés. A curious round of fixtures on Saturday, with five of the six games ending with single goal victories for the away teams. Zaragoza consolidated third position with a 0-1 victory over neighbours Huesca, Spanish youth international Ander Herrera scoring the only goal early in the second half. And Hércules stay just a point behind Marcelino's side after a similar result at Eibar, Tuni scoring after the restart to virtually condemn the Basque side to the second division B. Rayo Vallecano are still in the promotion race after they beat Salamanca 0-1, with Piti beating Alberto on the quarter hour mark to keep within three points of the top three.

Las Palmas moved away from the danger zone after a 0-1 win at Celta, a Marcos Márquez penalty a quarter of an hour from the end enough to take the Canary Islanders three points above their opponents in the table. Córdoba are now level with the Galicians after a 1-1 draw against Elche, Rubén saving a point for the Andalusians in injury time after Usero had given the visitors an early lead. And Albacete are still not safe after losing 0-1 at Levante, Robusté heading in a corner on the stroke of half time to give the Valencia based side the three points. (09.05.09)
