Valencia beat Marítimo 0-1 in a rainy night in Funchal, capital of the Madeira islands, to virtually wrap up their tie. In view of the bad weather, Emery decided to rest David Villa and play with Zigic and Morientes up front. Curiously the Spanish international striker had never played in the UEFA Cup despite has many appearances and goals in the Champions League, but within twelve minutes he had his name on the scoresheet, picking up a pass from Pablo and leaving Cardozo for dead before steering a shot past Marcos with the outside of his foot.

The Portuguese side were unlucky not to equalise when Miguelito's shot deflected off a defender on to the crossbar early in the second half. As the game wore on Emery decided it was safe to bring on Villa, but it proved to be a mistake as the striker was caught by a late tackle as he shot just wide of the target, leaving him limping for the last five minutes. And the Chés were let off the hook in the last minute when Fogaça headed against the post. A good result though, and they should have no problems wrapping things up in the Mestalla in a fortnight's time.
