Goals:
1-0. 05. Denneboom. Headed ball wide of Coltorti following set piece corner.

A bad start for Racing at the league stage, a defeat against theoretically the weakest side in a very strong group leaving them with an uphill battle to qualify for the next round. Denneboum headed a Kenneth Perez cross past Coltorti following a set piece corner in only the fifth minute of the game, and Steve McClaren's side could have added to their lead after that had the keeper not been on his toes.

The Spaniards didn't have a clear cut chance until Boschker saved with from Tchité close to half time. And although Muñiz threw on attacking reinforcements after the break they were unable to get past a well organised defence, Oscar Serrano coming closest to scoring with a long shot just wide of the far post. Racing's first ever appearance in a European competition may be coming to a close early if they don't react soon.
