Deportivo were easily beaten by former champions CSKA Moscow in their opening game of the mini-league section, putting more pressure on the Galicians for the remaining three matches. Valerón could have opened the scoring early on had he been able to beat Akinfeev, but soon afterwards 18 year old Dzagoev demonstrated why so many clubs are after him, beating Aranzubia with a well struck free kick. And just three minutes later he got his second of the night after a good run by Vagner Love down the left wing.

Cristian could have pulled one back later in the first half when his lob beat the keeper only to be cleared from in front of goal by a defender. But after that Depor were on the back foot, Aranzubia having to pull off saves from Zhirkov, Klasic and Vagner Love either side of half time. With just over an hour on the clock though Love made it three after Ignashevich headed back Krasic cross, and it was all over.
