Valencia took a big step towards reaching the knock-out stage after a 0-4 win at Rosenborg. It was a freezing cold night, but Unai Emery's side were particularly motivated by insults which had been published in a "Spanish course" published on the Norwegian side's website.

Mata opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half, his looping header coming back off the bar and entering the net off the back of Jarstein. Renan had a bit of work to do after that, but Mata had a goal disallowed for offside and Morientes missed a relatively easy chance before the break.

Fernandes had a shot deflected soon after the restart, and Skjelbred shot just wide of the post at the other end. It looked as if Valencia were going to suffer once again, but Pablo Hernández produced the goal of the night with a quarter of an hour to go, cutting in from the left wing past two defenders before stabbing a shot past the keeper.

After that it was plain sailing, Baraja firing home a third with three minutes to go. And a couple of minutes later Morientes generously set up Joaquín for a fourth, helping increase their goal average in case it is needed at the end. Valencia move up to second in their table, their slip up against Copenhagen now a thing of the past.
