Valencia were already sure of a place in the last 32, but they needed to win against group G leaders Saint Etienne to finish top of the group. However they had to settle in the end for a 2-2 draw which gave them second spot, meaning they will have to play a side dropping out of the Champions League in the next round.
Emery's side went behind on the half hour mark, Ilan running on to Payet's pass to lob Guaita. Morientes bundled in the equaliser from Joaquín's cross just three minutes later, but before half time the French team restored the lead after the young keeper spilled Dernis's cross into the path of Ilan.
Guaita made up for his mistake with a string of excellent saves after the restart, in particular from Mirallas and Dernis, and Payet fired another chance in to the side netting. Valencia saved a point though when substitute Zigic headed past Janot from close range after Del Horno had headed back a long cross, and with snow falling the two sides settled for the result.
