Real Madrid are out of the competition after a 2-1 aggregate defeat against Olympique Lyon. With the final at the Bernabeu stadium this year, Pellegrini's side were confident of overturning the one goal deficit from the first leg. And within six minutes Cristiano Ronaldo levelled the tie after running on to Guti's long pass to fire an angled shot under the legs of Lloris, the first goal the keeper had let in in over ten hours of football.

Higuaín should have scored again after that, in particular when he rounded Lloris only to fire a shot against the post, and then when the keeper got a hand to another short shortly before half time. Two changes at the break though by Claude Puel revitalised the French side, and after the visitors wasted a couple of good chances, Pjanic beat Casillas to dump Madrid out at the first knock-out stage for the sixth year in a row.
