Europa League, round of 16, second leg

Both La Liga sides made it through to the last eight on the away goal rule after nail-biting matches on Thursday night. Valencia kicked things off with a thrilling 4-4 draw at Werder Bremen, and although Unai Emery's side were always ahead from the moment that David Villa opened the scoring in the second minute, the Germans kept up the fight until the last minute. Mata scored a second and Villa completed his hat-trick later on, but each time Werder pegged them back, and it took a string of important saves from César to prevent disappointment. Later in the evening Atlético Madrid drew 2-2 at Sporting Lisbon, Agüero the man who did the damage with two early goals. Leidson and Polga equalised each time before the break, but Atlético held on to keep open their options of two cup titles this season. (18.03.10)
